Portrait Photographer Huddersfield – #FabCollab
A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be asked to join a collaboration of fabulous females one Saturday morning in Huddersfield. Involving fabulous upcycled jewellery designer Cate Wood, the fabulous fashionista Stephanie from The Wardrobe Angel, the conscientious coveter Anna from Angel in the North and the marvelous make-up artist Natalie Willingham it was a funfilled morning that is for sure.
Stephanie and Anna had volunteered to model some outfits that they had put together and Cate’s jewellery was the centre of attention.
The weather was a little changeable but by the force of off camera flash the grey skies did not dull our duties!!
Here are a collection of the images from the day, I hope you like
Portrait Photographer Huddersfield – Aphrodite Photography
The jewellery that Cate designs is amazing – her mantra being to rescue, revive and respectfully rearrange. She falls in love with obscure, interesting and charming things, findings picked up at local markets and trinkets that are part of the local heritage: hearth brushes worn by years of use, colliery tags that have been smoothed by the hundreds of hands they have passed through, vintage buttons removed from dresses and uniforms. She is curious about their past lives, the people they once belonged to and in the stories that are lost. Cate deconstructs and reconstructs these findings into unique pieces of jewellery. The bristles of a brush become tassels. A leather watch fob and a button become the fastening of a bracelet, old lost keys become jewels. Buttons feature heavily in her work and are symbolic for buttons are the fastenings that hold things together.

Portrait Photographer Huddersfield – Styled Photo Shoot
Last Sunday Sam came over for her styled shoot. We had two aims out of the day, 1. to get some boxing inspired shots for Sam and 2. to get some Kate Moss inspired styling shots for Aphrodite.
First the boxing shoot was set up for low key lighting. It took a little while to get the look just as I wanted it in camera but once we had the fun started. Sam trains hard and has a physique that shows this and the photos came out fabulous.
Prior to any styled shoot, I set up inspiration boards with my customers. This helps customers get a feel of what they are looking for and also gives me an idea of the style of image that the customer likes. With Sam we set up an inspiration board on Pinterest and both pinned images to it to share with each other what we liked. There was one particular image that we both thought was fab so we took inspiration for it and used the essence of it but changed the pose and the feel of it to be much more gritty in my opinion. We both ended up loving the final image we managed to get.
Then we were joined by the styling maestro who is Cate Wood. She knew the brief was Kate Moss inspired and she brought a couple of waistcoats, a tie and a hat to use to give us the look we were after.
It is amazing how different people can look in a matter of minutes.
I love what we got but the bottom image is my absolute favourite and is currently at the lab being printed BIG!
I am really enjoying the styled shoots and will share the next ones with you as soon as I can. If you fancy getting all styled up to fit a certain era or take inspiration from an iconic woman or man then give us a call and we can have a chat over coffee and cake! We love cake xx

Portrait Photographer West Yorkshire – Styled Photo Shoots
Last Sunday was the day to try out the concept of the styled photo shoot. I had a model, I had a stylist, I knew what I could do with the hair and between us the make-up was covered.
I wanted to get 2 definite looks out of the day, one being Geisha inspired and the other being a 1950s victory rolls look.
We started with the Geisha look and used the Snazaroo face paint set that I had purchased from Toys R Us the day before, purely for the white (I could not buy just white!! how annoying). The eyes were lined with black liquid eyeliner and we did a bright red small mouth on Rachel’s lips, hiding any other part of her lips with the white. The outfit was purely a silk robe that had been bought on my trip to Singapore years before, I knew it would come in handy one day.
Just using one light we tried with a white backdrop and it did not really work, so we switched quickly to black which was spot on for the images I wanted to get. They are different to my previous work but I like what we managed to get. What do you think?
Following this shoot we were joined by Cate Wood who was helping us style the 1950s look, she came armed with polka dots!! Hurrah!
We decided to shoot some of Rachel reclined on the sofa with the relevant colours in the background. Her outfit was chosen specifically by Cate out of the large pile Rachel had brought with her and fitted perfectly with the look I wanted to get. With a few minor posing adjustments and the studio lighting we got some great shots.
Rachel was then back in a sitting position with some rather lovely polka dot wrapping paper as her background. We also changed the look again to a more vintage classy look but both of the following pictures were Rachel fooling about – she forgets I am a photo ninja and I catch everything – outtakes?? I don’t think so they are fabulous xx
I hope you like this post and the photos included, why not let me know by adding a comment – it would really make my day xx

Portrait Photographer West Yorkshire – Different lighting styles
Hi guys
Sometimes it is nice just to get back to basics of lighting – so I set up the mini studio at home and had a play with split, butterfly and Rembrandt lighting. I think it is good to do this to remember how each looks and to help when you have new models/subjects to see which style suits them better! My daughter got the lucky job of being my model
Split lighting example
Butterfly Lighting Example
Rembrandt Lighting Example
Each lighting style I think gives a certain feel, obviously this can be altered with clever composition, post processing and other variables, but I find that Butterfly lighting is more beauty, fashion, fun. Rembrandt lighting is more dramatic and moody. Split lighting gives a more iconic look, and suits men and looks great in black and white.
This is just my opinion but I do think that it is good for every portrait photographer west yorkshire to review their style, ensure they can delivery different looks with the lighting available and use the available tools to get the best from your model/subject.
I feel that I am developing my style and feel this helps me to understand better what looks I like best and then challenges this regularly.

Portrait Photographer West Yorkshire – Helen’s having twins!….soon
Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of shooting Helen and her amazing bump! I love taking photos of pregnant ladies.

Helen came to me so we made use of every different backdrop and had some fun with different outfits too. Helen was great and she was able to sit or stand even though she is not far off having twins! She did great and I am really pleased with what we got and thankfully Helen loves them too!!

The next time we are together with the camera we will have two new boys to photograph and a very proud big brother – I can’t wait!
If you want some maternity shots or other portrait options just give me a call on 07763 610055 and lets chat about what you are looking for.

Wedding Photographer West Yorkshire – The Aphrodite Photography Brand
I understand that brand is important and I have talked about this before on my blog. I am trying to ensure that my brand is instantly recognizable. The next step of this is to change my brand mark on my photographs to fit in with my chosen branding.
This is the design which will be going on my images in the future. I really like it. What do you think, leave me a comment to let me know.
I am really trying to show people that my business is very professional and I want to do the best job I can do. Unfortunately you don’t always get the opportunity to show people all your work, your insurance documents that prove you are serious and not just a hobbyist, your kit that can cost a small fortune, all of which are required to give my customers the best possible service and images.
I can’t wait to get the brand/watermark file and start using it.

Portrait Photographer Huddersfield – Elin Grace
Last Sunday I had the lovely Elin Grace over with her Mummy Kelly to have some photos taken in my new smaller set at home. The set is a 4ft x 4ft backdrop, and a 4ft x 4ft floor drop and fits nicely in one of the rooms in my house. I have also ordered some 6ft x 4ft to have a go with too but unfortunately they had not arrived prior to this shoot. You can try them next time Elin.
Elin posed for a little time but then found it much more fun to bounce around like tigger!! She is adorable and funny but very hard to catch. Trying to catch some photos of her was the fun bit.
I often wonder whether Mum’s think “oh my god my child won’t sit still” but I think if you let children be children you get more natural and better shots and hopefully no upset kids. You just have to be a little more patient but then you get the laugh or the sneaky smile and you’re off!!
Portrait Photographer Huddersfield – Elin Grace
She really has the cutest smile. We had a lot of fun and I think next time we will venture into the park and take some with Mummy and Daddy too!
